Since 1983, the Ford Motor Company has used about 10 transmissions for its compact Ford Ranger. The transmission identification code can be found on the vehicle’s safety compliance label on the driver’s side door post.
Japanese Transmission Connection
The Ford Ranger shares many components with the Mazda compact trucks, including the M50D five-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Toyo Koygo and Mitsubishi manuals also were used.
The C3 three-speed automatic in the 1983 through 1988 Rangers are identified with a “V” with gear ratios 2.47, 1.47 and 1.00, according to the rangerstation.com.
A “W” identifies the three-speed automatic for the 1982 to 1984 four-wheel-drive Rangers.
